When drawing in Antarctica,
observations were preceded by bodily,
or kinesthetic, sensations.
These varied in quality and intensity.

For example,
I drew while standing
on the bridge of the ship,
Aurora Australis,
high above the hull.
The pitching and rolling motion
of the sea beneath was amplified.
Lines in the drawing
record my motion
with the ship through the water.
