Fred Elliott, Big Ben, Heard Island, Jan 1953. Drawing on paper

The wizened face of the glacier makes the lower slopes formidable but the great smooth gradients of snowfields higher up gives it a languorous welcoming look. Along the coast are other glaciers. Challenger and Baudissan are heavily crevassed; one like a petrified giant forest, its dark crevasses like gloomy spaces between dead trees. A glowing emerald tinge forms as the sun illuminates a different face. (Mawson Diary, 23 January 1955)
