Scientific instruments are dropped overboard in Antarctic waters in order to collect information about changes that are happening at different depths. By measuring rates of change in the temperature and salinity of the bottom water along ice shelves, for example, scientists can make predictions about global warming.

Polystyrene cups are often decorated, bound up in bags and sent down with the scientific instruments. When crushed under the immense pressure of the water, they become miniature treasures that expeditioners souvenir.

This is one of several souvenirs that marine biologist and artist Karin Beaumont made with cups that she and her friends drew and painted.
