Scientific instruments are dropped overboard in Antarctic waters to collect information about changes that are happening there. By measuring rates of change in the temperature and salinity of the bottom water along ice shelves, for example, scientists can make predictions about global warming. Polystyrene cups are often decorated, bound up in bags and sent down with the scientific instruments. When crushed under the immense pressure of the water, they become miniature treasures that expeditioners souvenir.
This cup is a souvenir of marine biologist and artist, Karin Beaumont.
