  1. The 9

After cutting back my work load I decided I wanted to start dedicating more of my time to hobbies I enjoy, and trying some new ones. Having never touched a canvas since early high school (crazy I know), the thought of committing something to a canvas was on my mind for a long time, but I felt like a toddler learning to ride a bike. It was scarey. I wanted the security of some training wheels, something to help me get going.

Start small, I thought. So I made myself the tiniest frame ever, painsakingly cutting the hardwood from scraps with an old saw at a friends house, priming the canvas over weekend visits and many cups of tea. I used my friend’s paints to create my first piece on my own.

I was not incredibly happy with it, it looked so alone. And it felt so alone, I was floundering in this new world of painting. What would other people do if they were presented with the same little canvas, and asked to decorate it on their own, in their own unique way? I was intrigued. I wanted to ask not only established artists, but people like me who may have never touched a paintbrush in the last few decades.

I talked my idea over with a friend who has always painted, and started anticipating what I had not even asked people to do yet. On my birthday, this friend gave me the most awesome gift – a set of 9 cute little blank canvases, perfectly matched. It was the best encouragement I could have received.

I decided I would paint the first one myself, and ask 8 people I connect with in some way to do me the honor of painting on the others, so that I could one day have the 9 canvases displayed together as a collection. It would be so rewarding, to see a collection of art from people all connected to me, from places far and wide, come together as a visual community on my wall.

The community is slowly coming together, and it gets more and more exciting each time a new piece returns home. Their underlying connection to me, and their common physical size, are the ties that bring them together and make them belong. Yet they so far all look so unique, so cute, its fantastic.

I can’t wait until the collection is complete and I can thank these wonderful contributors properly.
