Walking out of Spencer’s Street station in Melbourne yesterday I saw a pile of ice on the footpath.
It was covered in black specks that looked like fallout from exhausts of cars and trucks.

People were gathered around it, talking and taking photos.

At first I thought it was an artist’s installation. But nobody knew anything about that.

I later made a small drawing from memory.

Perhaps this was ice left over from a party?
Perhaps it was an anonymous art piece?

Whatever the intention of whoever put it there, the ice, collecting evidence of pollution, worked to raise awareness of the impact of cars on our environment.

‘We’re breathing that stuff!’ said someone.
