Pteropod

The animation, Pteropod, was inspired by listening to Karin Beaumont.

As an Antarctic scientist and artist, she objectively observes and subjectively responds to what she understands and feels.

I am aware of changes in the ocean
such as ocean acidification
…affecting the health of some species
such as the sea-butterfly, or pteropod…

I have observed changes within a season
of the types and numbers of plankton,
and also changes between seasons.

These are related to changes
in temperature and salinity in the ocean
as well as the extent of ice-cover.

Such changes trigger changes
in the plankton community
which affect other animals in the ocean.
The interactions between
all the creatures in the ocean
are very complex!

I have observed changes in ice-cover
and the timing of sea-ice melt.

I am aware of changes in the ocean
such as ocean acidification
which is affecting the health of some species,
such as the sea-butterfly, or pteropod.
