Voices from the Southern Ocean
I can only describe Antarctica from my brief experience of a 6-week expedition to Davis and Mawson (in 2002), and from what I learned from other people who have worked there.
Being in Antarctica felt like moving through a time warp. I felt I was witnessing an Ice Age such as Earth has experienced before, and will experience again.
I felt Antarctica’s indifference to human life.
I became acutely aware, listening to scientists who were working there, of our collective impact on its fragile ecosystem.
